The main goal of the afternoon event was to provide the opportunity for university staff at Fulda UAS to come together, share different opinions and experiences within the E³UDRES² alliance, and develop ideas ands steps on how the university of the future could look. We were also thrilled to welcome our E³UDRES² partners, with at least one representative from each partner country.
The event opened with a welcoming speech by the President of Fulda UAS, Prof. Dr. Karim Khakzar. His speech was followed by a message from the Hessian Minister for Science and Research, who emphasized the importance of university alliances in higher education. Before moving on, university staff involved in E³UDRES² reflected on the accomplishments so far, such as the creation of the online platform E³UDRES² Arena, the possibilities of shared lectures across universities, and much more.
Afterward, the panel discussion began. Speakers representing various roles at the university, such as the university Chancellor Anke Günther and the representative of the E³UDRES² Scientific Council, Prof. Dr. Claudia Wiesner, shared valuable insights into the establishment of partnerships, strategies, and forms of cooperation. The discussion highlighted the milestones achieved so far while also emphasizing further steps needed at the university level for continued growth.
Using the panel discussion as a transition to the World Café, participants then had the opportunity to take a hands-on approach to “creating the alliance’s future together” in a workshop setting. They brainstormed topics such as teaching, research, and support structures. A coffee break followed not only to let ideas settle but also to draw attention to the Ukrainian “Unissued Diplomas” exhibition, which commemorates students who lost their lives during the Russian invasion and were therefore unable to complete their studies. The event then continued with an inspiring keynote from Prof. Dr. Ulf-Daniel Ehlers.
Prof. Dr. Ulf-Daniel Ehlers presented a fresh perspective on education and the roles of students and university staff, emphasizing active student participation in shaping their own learning paths, with staff facilitating these individualized journeys. He also underlined the importance of equipping students with so-called “future skills” to prepare them for the challenges ahead and to foster a mindset focused on anticipating tomorrow’s and future needs. In an ever-changing and globalized world, this topic is crucial in helping universities adapt to unpredictable developments.
Motivated by this keynote, participants moved on to the final agenda point and took part in the Future Sightings Workshop. Divided into four groups, they developed a shared vision for the university as well as the first steps needed to move toward it. Across all groups it was emphasized that there is a need for greater flexibility in learning, research, leadership and collaboration. Furthermore, the responsible use of digital technology, like AI is just as essential. the As a pleasant conclusion, the event ended with closing remarks and a delicious buffet featuring dishes from the E³UDRES² partner countries.
